Screening Tests That Determines Your Lasik Surgery Suitability

Everyone who is going to be treated for the eye disorders with Lasik surgery should undergo screening tests before the operation. Though it is a safe surgery, it does not suit everybody. Hence a clear examination by the surgeon is needed before getting operated. A clear discussion is needed between the patient and the doctor about the other treatments and surgeries that the patient has undergone earlier. It should also include gathering the details about the food habits and the lifestyle of the patients. This examination by the surgeon decides if to go ahead with the surgery or not. Some of the tests are discussed below which are quite useful.

The first of all includes a comprehensive test of the eye and vision by the doctor. This is carried out by instilling "cyclopegic" drops in to the eyes. These drops enlarge the eyes and this restricts the eye muscles from focusing too much on any one particular thing. All this process provides the doctor with the basic information about the eye and sight of the patient. The patient should also be tested if he has any problem with the muscle alignment or in other words any problems of binocular vision. When the surgery done in monovision method, there are chances that this will result in intensifying binocular vision.

The tears of the Lasik candidate are also tested prior to the surgery because both the quality and quantity of the tears are very crucial in determining the health of the eye. When the results of the test reports any fault, the surgery should be postponed till the tears acquire the normal characteristics that are desired. The cornea should also be tested to decide if it has a shape that supports the surgery. There are instances of getting corneal diseases after the treatment. To avoid situations like this, the corneal topography is tested with the help of a computerized method. This method determines the shape as well as the power of cornea. These are measured and are depicted with colors. While red is used to represent deeper areas, lighter colors are used to depict flatter area.

Wavefront analysis is a test which is helpful in measuring the optical irregularities of higher order. These include myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Another test to be performed is about the thickness of cornea. This test which is known as pachymetery is highly important because all the refractive surgeries including Lasik surgery changes the thickness of the cornea after the operation. Hence this surgery is not suitable for the patients with thin cornea. However, this test is not given much significance now-a-days before Lasik.

Yet another important test is the measurement of the size of pupil during daytime and night time because after the surgery, the quality of the vision is determined by the pupil size. For example, patients who have pupils that get enlarged in the dim lights will suffer from contrast problems, glares after the surgery. To measure the thickness of the pupil infrared pupilometer is used.
